Nanometrica precision

The Phi-W Robotic Wrist system is used in several fields. One of the main ones is the precise positioning of lenses for the automated assembly of laser sources.

This system integrates Phidrive’s microgrippers, and two ultra-precise corrective axes (accuracy of about 1 mrad) to pick up lenses of various shapes and sizes (on the order of millimeters) from a blister pack, correct their alignment, and glue them inside the laser source.

Solutions for ultra-precise alignment

The PHI-SS-6DOF is a nanopositioner piezoelectric device by Phi Drive which combines 6 degrees of freedom.

The displacement/tilting system is composed of: UX, UY, UZ, ROTX, ROTY, ROTZ. Each PHI-SS stage is inspired by the “Micro” version of Phi Drive but the dimensions have been limited to create a device that can be positioned in very small spaces.

Phi Drives' nanopositioner division focuses on the design, engineering, and manufacturing of piezoelectric motor-driven positioners and integrated nanopositioning solutions for applications with the highest resolution, repeatability, and stability requirements. Phidrive's piezo flexure stages allow nanopositioning and scanning with nanometer precision in up to 6 axes, including tip, tilt and yaw motion. XYZ stages are customizable according to specific use.
The PHI-SS-6DOF designed by Phidrive combine sub-nanometer resolution and guiding precision with no blacklash. The PHI-SS-6DOF is particularly suitable for applications in semiconductors  manufacturing, metrology, super-resolution microscopy, interferometry or inspection systems. The motorized stages are supported by a complete line of controllers for the various motors and piezoelectric actuators.
Flexure technology, piezoelectric actuators, and the absence of friction and lubricants absence of rolling guides ensure excellent and robust mechanics. Flexure guides are free of maintenance, friction, and wear, and do not require lubrication. Their stiffness allows high load capacity and they are insensitive to shock and vibration. Positioning optimization is supported by piezoelectric motion controllers and is easily customized to meet customer needs. Phidrive has specific patents for high-precision mechanisms.

The design experience of PhiDrive engineers has developed the PHI-PKMM, an optical mirror support with flexure technology. The PHI-PKMM is composed of a monolithic body in Ergal which avoids any misalignment and increases the stability of the component.

The PHI-PKMM holds the mirror securely in place allowing for precise tip and tilt adjustments. The movements along the two tilting axes are performed by deformation elements that prevent play and backlash and also allow rotation along the axes of the lenses.

Precise tilting

PHI-SS-TS is a piezoelectric tilting stage by PhiDrive which is based on the same principle used by rotary tables, but with a different geometry. By making it possible to tilt an object by approximately ±5° around a rotation axis located outside the stage itself, it grants closed-loop control by means of the embedded encoder.

It can be equipped with a manual correction stage to adjust the location of the rotation axis, which also allows integration with PHI-SS-ME. It can be used to tilt a GriPhi piezoelectric microgripper.

PhiDrive also provides PHI-SS, an electronic solution to control PHI-SS-ME; such a system makes it possible to comfortably get precision closed-loop positioning via PC interface

Enhancing precision of robotic arms

Semiconductors production, microscopy, fiber optic sensor assembly , biotechnology and industrial automation require positioning systems with high resolution and repeatability, often in the order of nanometers. In addition to that, low response times result only from using piezoelectric technology.

PhiDrive has developed the PHI-W wrist designed specifically for automatic microcomponents assembly lines.

PHI-W can be used with PHI-SS electronics or even combined with robots and parallel kinematic machines.

The robot or parallel kinematic machines guarantee the complete reconfigurability of the assembly line but alone they cannot guarantee the necessary precision guaranteed by the PHI-W wrist. In this way it is possible to obtain completely reconfigurable and precise assembly lines for microcomponents.

The 2-axes piezoelectric positioner Gimbal was developed by Phi Drive together with Arquimea during the PRE2POS project thanks to the Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding program.

The Performance of Micron

By virtue of our last patent, Phi Drive has presented the first evolution in terms of performance of a piezoelectric motor. Keeping the essential actuator characteristics unchanged, AG-HT provides an outstanding increase in terms of torque.

Its characteristics of compactness and high specific torque make AG-HT suitable for military and aerospace applications, but not only. The specific HTS version has been conceived and designed to operate in a high vacuum and is tested for space applications.

Phi Drive’s driver for rotary and linear tables

Phi Drive developed PHI-SS, a single device to drive the main rotary and linear tables sold by the company. Such a solution is compact and easy-to-use; therefore, it can be connected to all of the compatible tables with no need for hardware adjustments.

The device grants not only open-loop actuation, but also closed-loop actuation thanks to a port which makes it possible to read data coming from encoders.

The user interface on a PC allows for a practical management of the system and provides several options to move rotary and linear tables by Phi Drive.

There exist two different versions of the PHI-SS device: Driver and Amplifier. While the former generates the control signal internally, the latter includes a BNC connector to amplify an external control signal. PHI-SS is compatible with the entire PHI-SS family of actuators: PHI-SS-MI, PHI-SS-ME, PHI-SS-MA, PHI-SS-LI.

Linear Micro-Positioning Piezo Stage

Phi Drive has developed a micrometric positioning piezo stage which is excellent for precision mechanical machining, optics and research.

The piezoelectric principle it is based on grants a high positioning precision with no need for lubrication. Despite the small size, PHI-SS-LI makes it possible to reach a high load/weight ratio. Multiple tables can be assembled together, thus providing a higher operational flexibility.

One can choose between a V and an S rail; while the former provides higher precision in the direction orthogonal to the direction of movement, the latter allows for the withstanding of higher loads.

Phi Drive also provides PHI-SS, an electronic solution to control PHI-SS-LI.
