Numerical methods to find optimal geometrical configurations

Phi Drive is a leading company in functional and numerical analysis of both traditional and flexure kinematic systems.
Numerical optimization, in terms of both structure and kinematics, is crucial for finding the configuration which better satisfies a customer in a short time. Thanks to the help of a numerical optimization algorithm, one can decrease prototyping costs and grant highly performing mechanisms.

Rigid kinematics

With the help of multi-objective genetic algorithms, Phi Drive identified a design optimum for the elongation of an hydraulically-actuated arm. The algorithms provided the Pareto fronts of the physical model by trying to combine three objectives:

  • Minimization of the force required by the hydraulic actuator;
  • Minimization of the actual stroke of the hydraulic actuator;
  • Minimization of the geometric encumbrance of the system with respect to the rest of the structure.

The result of the optimization, which was able to satisfy the three requirements better than any other possibility, was then validated by means of a sensitivity analysis to understand how construction tolerances, during the industrialization phase, can modify the results expected from the numerical analysis.

Depending on the complexity of the physical model and the kinematic system, both in terms of static and dynamic analysis, Phi Drive can choose the best optimization algorithm to rapidly and accurately converge to the ideal result.
